Take a ride to the wild side and join us on a remote journey as we pass across back country stations on the North Islands remote and beautiful East Cape. Our trails are the riverbeds, remote farms and high-country passes that zigzag through forgotten towns that connect with back country New Zealand.
Drive your own or hire one of our 4WDs and take an adventurous, escorted ‘Tag-along-tour’ through the New Zealand outback and high country. Travel in the safety of a small convoy led by an expert guide.
Starting Location
The assembly point for the start of the trip is Matawai and we stay at the Matawai pub for the first and last nights of the trip, it’s a real old country pub with all sorts of memorabilia in the bar from the days when it was the main stop off in the droving days right up to the late ’60′s. They will provide a good pub meal and breakfast the next morning
Previous Off-Road Experience Not Necessary
These tour’s have been designed so that the first day of the itinerary is one that can be driven by a competent driver with a full drivers license. You will be presented with a Starter Pack at the beginning of the trip, which includes some sound advice on off-road driving. The guide vehicle heads the convoy giving advice on various techniques to be used on the way by UHF two way radio, simple guidelines are reinforced as the tour progresses – we always bring our folk back alive!
Head Southwest from Matawai to Marewa Station through Country back roads, then 4WD through Marewa Station to the Hangaroa River on the edge of the Urewera's and the start of Rua's track. Camp on the edge of the Hangaroa River or shearer’s quarters at the Station Base.
Continue across Marewa Station and in to Waimaha Station then on to the Ruakituri River Valley and stay at shearers quarters on Tuahu Station on the edge of the Ruakituri River.
Head up Whakapunaki, 3000ft for views from Mahia in the south to Gisborne in the North, from there drive around to do a 4WD track at the base of Whakapunaki on Pohataroa Station, then head to Motel at Tolaga Bay for that night.
From Tolaga Bay head North West to Tutamoe Station on country back roads, then 4WD through the Station and up Tutamoe (3000ft) with views North to Hikurangi and South to Gisborne, continue cross country to Waipoa Station and on to Matawai Pub for that night.
Budget estimate for all accommodation, evening meals at Matawai pub, cafe or similar at Tolaga Bay, all food for evening meals at Hangaroa and Ruakituri nights. Food for lunches and breakfasts will be supplied buffet style help yourself in the remote areas of the trip and breakfasts will be at Matawai pub Day 1 and Tolaga Bay Cafe Day 4, so in summary all food. Also included in the trip price, all station crossing fees, guide and recovery vehicle.

Vehicle Hire Rates
Toyota Land cruiser Prado full time 4WD with high and low ratio, 3.0 litre turbo charged intercooled diesel, long wheel base vehicles are available for hire should you not have your own vehicle.
5-10 days NZ$134 per day (3 day minimum hire)
11-20 days NZ$128 per day
(including basic recovery and fire prevention kits)
You want a Higher Spec?
A Toyota Prado diesel 4WD with lo-ratio or similar can be supplied for additional $165.00 per day including upgraded insurance package which significantly reduces your excess.
The trip starts on 17th February, the team meet up at Matawai that evening, and the first track is the following day, 18th, last day of trekking is 21st when we all stay at Matawai again and everyone heads off on the 22nd Feb.
