Come with us to an underground hideaway of magnificent natural beauty. An ancient place, deep beneath the earth, where stalactites and stalagmites abound. You’ll see fossilized shellfish – the size they were, millions of years before humans discovered the scallop pie! Turn out the lights and gaze up at the roof of the cave far above. There are glow-worms, shining like stars overhead in a subterranean sky.

Te Anaroa caves tour is a safe underground experience which has delighted visitors of all ages for more than a hundred years. You will enjoy an informal and interesting guided tour as we journey together through spectacular ancient limestone formations.

Te Anaroa Cave Tour 1
This 1-hour tour allows you to discover the ancient stalactite and stalagmite formations. You will explore Academy Corner, Lot’s Wife and the Fairy Grotto.

Te Anaroa Cave Tour 2
Explore everything the Te Anaroa Caves have to offer. This 1.5-hour tour takes you through the entire cave, including the Organ Pipes and Ancient Fossils.

Rebecca Adventure Cave Tour
First you will do the Te Anaroa Cave Tour 1 and then start your Rebecca Adventure Cave Tour. You’ll start with a gentle abseil down about 8 metres to the floor of Rebecca Cave. Rebecca Cave is a modern-day “living” cave. That means water flows through it and – instead of finding fossils – the creatures in Rebecca Cave are alive and well. You’ll see masses of glow-worms. Glow-worms are fascinating little creatures which use their light to attract insects to eat. You may be lucky enough to spot our tiny ancient friend, the Cave Weta. There are about 70 different species of Weta in New Zealand. Cave Wetas are the ugly – stick like ones that rarely venture beyond their dark hiding places. Cave Wetas are harmless and shy insects and they have been around since the dinosaurs. Eventually you emerge from Rebecca Cave into a sheltered pocket of native bush, feeling invigorated by your time underground in such a majestic and awe-inspiring place.

In the interest of safety, wear sturdy footwear. Jandals and sandals are not recommended. Safety helmets and lights supplied. Minimum age for Rebecca Cave Adventure is 12 years.
