Mission Bay

Mission-Bay

Mission Bay, The Promenade is just a short, picturesque drive from Auckland city along the beautiful Tamaki Drive waterfront. Originally known for its Mission House, the golden beach and thriving cafe scene now make Mission Bay a favourite destination for Aucklanders. The Melanesian Mission House was built from volcanic stone bought from Rangitoto. It was opened in 1859 to coincide with the arrival of 38 Melanesians on board the Mission vessel, Southern Cross. By 1915 only the stone dining hall block remained which is now an up market restaurant.

Mission Bay’s golden beach is safe for swimming year-round while the reserve and promenade are perfect for roller-blading, jogging, volleyball, touch rugby and a variety of other pursuits. Sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and cycling are also popular. Rollerblades, kayaks and bikes are available for hire. Those who prefer a more leisurely life style may sun bathe, people watch, picnic or simply do nothing at all. The restaurant strip, Auckland’s only beachfront dining precinct is the ideal place to enjoy a coffee, drink or meal. For children, there’s a wonderful playground, a fountain and lots and lots of golden sand to get between their toes.
