The collection of the dregs of society (trigger happy thugs, ex convicts and suchlike) and the influx of money through trade eventually led to utter anarchy earning it the reputation as the 'Hell-hole of the Pacific'. Today Russell is a sleepy town (pop 1100) catering to the needs of tourists, sailors and explorers.
