Northland is a region that will stimulate every sense. Not only is it the birthplace of the nation, where Europeans first settled New Zealand, but Northland is also home to giant kauri forests, sub tropical rain forests and miles of stunning coastline capped off with iconic Cape Reinga.
The native New Zealand kauri is a massive tree, the largest known Kauri is 51.5 metres high, mid-girth 13.77 metres; estimated timber content 244.5 cubic metres; height to its first branch 9.4 metres. Estimated age 1,200 years. It's been used commercially as ships masts in the 1800's and in 1900 kauri gum was New Zealand's largest export. After leaving Auckland we stop at Matakohe Kauri and Pioneer museum before continuing north to the Waipoua Forest, home of the giant kauri 'Tane Mahuta' or 'God of the Forest'. We stay at Omapere, a small but picturesque village nestled between the hills and Hokianga Harbour.
This sub-tropical region has the finest maritime park in New Zealand with 144 islands, secluded bays, and an abundance of marine life including marlin, whales, penguins, dolphins, gannets and many other species. Being somewhat sheltered, the area is ideal for yachting, fishing, kayaking and diving. Rolling countryside, tidal estuaries, mangroves, sparkling and long silvery beaches abound. It is an area of considerable historical significance, and is the place where Maori and European signed the Treaty of Waitangi that joined them as one nation. Long considered the cradle of Polynesian and European settlement in New Zealand, the area is rich in history and natural beauty.
Two of the most popular day excursions from Pahia:
The Cream Trip (Cruise the Bay of Islands)
This cruise follows the path of the original 1927 'Cream Trip' and will take you on a journey back in time as you cruise past the secluded islands of the Bay, delivering essential supplies and mail to island residents. See dolphins in their natural environment and if conditions are suitable, try swimming alongside these inquisitive creatures - a once in a lifetime experience. On arrival at Cape Brett Lighthouse, we take you through the stunning Hole in the Rock at Motukokako Island. Take in the majestic Grand Cathedral Cave before heading back into the sheltered waters of the Bay. Your journey also includes a visit to the Black Rocks and Marsden Cross (where in 1814 the first Christian sermon was held in NZ). While we stop for lunch, enjoy the opportunity to visit an island. Relax on the sandy beach or take a short walk.
Cape Reinga via Ninety Mile Beach

the famous Ninety Mile Beach. Enj
oy breathtaking views that go on forever as you drive along this "highway of the North". Climb the giant sand dunes and toboggan back down.
