TranzAlpine Express

Tranz-Alpine

Rated as one of the top six scenic train journeys in the world, the famous TranzAlpine train will take you deep into the heartland of the South Island… a coast to coast journey through some of the world’s most extreme and beautiful scenery.

From Greymouth, the train travels east through lush alpine beech rain forests of the South Island’s west coast towards the Southern Alps, ascending through the Otira tunnel to the alpine village of Arthurs Pass – a base to explore Arthurs Pass National Park.  From Arthurs Pass the train slowly descends through spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River,  crossing the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch – known as the garden city and the South Island’s largest city. This rail trip is 223.8 kilometres long and takes just four and a half hours. There are 19 tunnels, and 4 viaducts, the highest being the Staircase standing at 73 metres.

The TranzAlpine includes an open air viewing carriage where all your senses are awakened with the clean, fresh, mountain air. This service also includes a fully licensed café car and professional Train Managers who provide informative commentary to ensure a totally unique experience.
