The Akaroa walk has the most spectacular views of the Southern Alps, Banks Peninsula, Lyttelton and Akaroa harbours and on a clear day Mount Cook. The walk begins in Christchurch where most of the walk takes you along ridge tops to the stunning French styled town of Akaroa.

Along the way you are accompanied by a knowledgeable guide who will share with you stories about the colourful history of Canterbury, and share their passion for this unique area. Each night you will be staying in boutique lodge style accommodation with restaurant quality meals where you will experience and enjoy some of the finest foods that Canterbury has to offer.

Day 1: Christchurch to Diamond Harbour - 9km walking

The Akaroa Walk begins in Christchurch where you meet fellow walkers and your friendly guide. After a  ride on the Christchurch Gondola, from the Heathcote Valley to the crater rim, you will experience the first of many breathtaking views. You will ramble along an interesting 9km trail on the Crater Rim to Godley Head, where you will inspect World War II gun emplacements. There are panoramic views of the city, the Southern Alps and the coastline throughout this section. Your guide will point out many historical and fascinating sights.

A ferry then takes you across Lyttelton Harbour into the peaceful Diamond Harbour, which brings you to your first night’s accommodation.

Day 2: Diamond Harbour to Hilltop - 22km walking

Today you cover a distance of 22kms. The trail leads you up to Mt Fitzgerald where you will experience breathtaking views. From the summit follow undulating walkways to Mt Sinclair where again the views are simply stunning. There is constantly changing scenery and in particular you will delight in seeing Pigeon Bay , Port Levy, and Lake Forsyth and in the distance Kaitorete Spit... eventually sight sheltered Akaroa Harbour.

When You arrive at our own Pentrip Lodge, you are welcomed with a much deserved cold beverage and a hot spa. A highlight of Pentrip Lodge is the lovely home cooked dinner, with fresh Akaroa smoked salmon and local produce, which is served while you relax on the deck or by the fire.

Day 3 - Hilltop to Akaroa - 11km walking

The total walking distance today is 11km. You start this section with a trip to the oldest living tree on Banks Peninsula – a beautiful 2000 year old Totara,  a true giant!  From here move to the top of French Peak, which is a total of 815 metres above Akaroa... and then start the gentle descent through lush farming valleys into Wainui. The ferry then takes you across the harbour to the French settlement of Akaroa. Later that evening you will gather and celebrate the completion of the walk at one of Akaroa’s top restaurants.
The following morning we will transport you back to Christchurch.
A shuttle will return you to Christchurch approximately midday of Day 4. If you wish to stay in Akaroa later, you may request a later shuttle. If you will be extending your stay further, a shuttle voucher will be issued with your choice of departure day. Accommodation after the night of Day 3 is not included.
