Whirinaki Forest – One of the World’s Most Precious Rain Forests
Known as ‘dinosaur forest’ is a place of crystal-clear water, blue ducks and soaring forests of ancient giant podocarps and beech tree, It contains species unique to New Zealand that have developed over millions of years. There are magnificent views of the river cutting through ancient lava flow’s, and caves with pumice deposits and remnants of the Taupo eruption nearly 2000 years ago.
This was one of New Zealand’s most famous conservation battlegrounds, where people actively fought to save a magnificent native forest. Today Whirinaki’s beauty is protected for everyone to enjoy through a comprehensive network of walks, tracks and huts and a range of opportunities for visitors. The forest park offers over 100 kilometres of tramping tracks so local knowledge of the tracks are essential, Our guides will help you rediscover the miracle of life, the tranquillity of tall mountains, the crystal clear Whirinaki river, waterfalls, forest, bush tracks, bird life, nature, people and relationships in balance. The walk is graded easy, includes flora and fauna interpretation and also some local tribal myths and legends. You will experience the food and medicine plants that made the Whirinaki rainforest so prized in the pre-European days.
