Experience eco rafting like never before, on New Zealand’s largest and swiftest unspoiled high volume river the Clutha Mata-Au. This mighty 45km journey, also grade 2-3 rapids are slightly more demanding. This is recommended for rafters with some experience, though first-timers are welcome for a challenge joining the group!
Every raft trip begins with a safety and familiarization briefing on the riverbank. We then start our journey down river starting with the “Snake Rapids” in the morning, pick Tea-Tree tea, and stop on an island for lunch (provided). Later we find time to fossick for some quartz gold on one of the river terraces. Now the whitewater becomes more challenging as we run “Hassing’s Hole” and “Smokin’ Joe’s Rapid” at the entrace to the peaceful Maori Gorge.
This trip is run out of Wanaka, a town with a tourism and high country farming economy. 5 Hours from Christchurch via the Inland Scenic Route over the Lindis Pass, and 1 hour from Queenstown over the Crown Range Highway (89).
